Jake Bailey is no stranger to resilience. Thrust into the national spotlight as a teenager when he delivered a powerful speech at his high school prize-giving—just days after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer—Jake’s story has inspired countless people in New Zealand and beyond. Since then, he has built a reputation as a sought-after speaker and author, known for his reflections on resilience, leadership, and finding purpose.

But Jake is clear that his life is about much more than that chapter. Today, he is the General Manager of Inspire Foundation, a charity dedicated to unlocking the potential of young people across New Zealand. Inspire identifies exceptionally talented 15–23 year olds—whether in sport, the arts, culture, or academia—and provides wraparound support to help them thrive. That support includes financial backing, professional development, wellbeing resources, and perhaps most importantly, a community of peers who understand the unique pressures of performing at a high level from a young age.

Since its beginnings 14 years ago, Inspire has supported more than 600 young New Zealanders, from Paralympians and world champions to emerging artists, scientists, and cultural leaders. Together, they’ve received over $2.5 million in direct support - fueled by the generosity of corporates, family donors, and community partners who believe in backing the next generation of exceptional talent.

For Jake, this work is deeply personal. His own experience with adversity has shaped his outlook, but in leading Inspire he is focused on building futures, not dwelling on the past. In our conversation, he speaks candidly about what it means to move forward, the psychology of resilience, and the lessons he’s learned about creating lasting impact and meaning - both in life and in work.
